Package design - The White Canary Cafe
Client work, 2021
Tools - Adobe Photoshop, pencil sketches
The White Canary Cafe was looking for a concept for their coffee cups that would create hype around their product offer nearing the end of the year in December 2022. I worked closely with Mayesha Khondoker to ideate on a concept that could do well to achieve this..
Since this was a time ahead of the release of "Spider-Man: No Way Home", we tried to tell a little story on the cup that took inspiration from the original comic books. This aligns well with past packaging concepts that took inspiration from superheroes.
It was Mayesha's idea to create a spin-off that would have Spiderman and MJ as the main characters. Before we decided on this, I had made some ideas involving the entire Avengers, but that was just too many characters on a single cup and too big of story to tell on a canvas our audience will not have a long enough attention span to pay attention to.
I art directed this coffee cup and illustrated it, incorporating my own techniques with the retro concept art style typically found in the Spider-Man comics.
This took me 10 full-time working days and involved 2 to 3 feedback rounds with Mayesha. Here are some work-in-progress photos, showing the chaos that eventually led to some structure.
The cup received a lot of interest from customers, with many sharing them on their instagram stories and thus organically promoting the cafe. :)
Stage 1
Mood-boarding and colour palette selection
First off, I went through some images and made a moodboard on Pinterest. I also searched comic books among other resources to understand popular original depictions of Spiderman with Mary-Jane.
Based on recurring colours found in these images from original comics, I rendered a colour palette.
