Background

Violence against women and girls is one of the most widespread, persistent and devastating human rights violations in our world today and is a threat to millions of girls and women online and offline. It affects women regardless of their age, background, or level of education. This violence takes many forms, including physical, sexual, or psychological violence, as well as economic abuse and exploitation (Unesco, 2022).

25 November has been designated as the Orange Day by the UNiTE to End Violence against Women Campaign(link is external). The colour orange symbolises a brighter future, free of violence. It also serves as a means of demonstrating your solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence and it is therefore used as the colour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women (Unesco, 2022).

More recently, the UN announced that the 25th of every month in the year be commemorated as Orange Day.

The idea

I did a motion piece to contribute to the discussion surrounding women and emotionally/physically taxing settings. The self portrait allowed some reflection on how these wider problems affected someone like me in subtle but life-changing ways. At the same time, drawing this piece helped contextualise the layers and layers of challenges faced by women from various socioeconomic backgrounds in different communities, with women in the most immediately dangerous circumstances being exposed to physical violence.
